The environmental dimension an interdisciplinary research area

Abstract

This paper is based on the assumption that the professional training of any scientist (researcher) involves knowledge on sustainable development, irrespective of the scientific field of his/her work. The introductory part of the paper defines fundamental concepts such as: ecology, environment protection and conservation, and sustainable development. The study focuses on the concept of sustainable development, discussing its most important principles. The categories of arguments through which we want to demonstrate the assertion in the title of the paper, are discussed in the sections of the present material and approach: a) the relevance of the principles of sustainable development in different fields of science, as they are presented in the taxonomy of the research areas of the National University Research Council (NURC); b) the principles of sustainable development which have a high generality degree, without being differentiated by field of research. Sustainable development occupies a central place in the evaluation systems of research and therefore this issue proves to be an interdisciplinary area for each research field.
