Abstract

Throughout the European Union, companies are being encouraged to replace traditional disposal options by implementing improved, systematic approaches to waste management. The same companies are also being persuaded to produce and disseminate information about their wastes in the form of waste reports. Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) are finding it especially difficult to comply with these demands. Aside from the associated time and manpower costs, the main reasons are that SMEs have difficulties accessing appropriate information about the subject and a lack of expertise and experience in the subject area. To help overcome these constraints, an interactive CD-ROM based training tool for the management and minimization of non-domestic wastes is being developed by a group of European partners. The tool will facilitate the implementation of best practice in waste management and waste reporting. This will help to create a common structure for the development of waste management plans within companies across Europe and improve/facilitate compliance with European waste management legislation.
